Place Expansion Meeting (Initial) - Stockton (November 2023)

Introduction

Context: Place based working

Sport England invested in 12 Local Delivery Pilots’ (including one in the Tees Valley – the You’ve Got This programme in the South Tees), who have worked for 5 years, taking a whole systems approach to help tackle inactivity and inequalities in their places. The evidence from these pilots suggests that the action to strengthen communities and initiatives is rooted in the distinctive local characteristics of a place and that there is recognition of the need for action across multiple layers of society to address inequalities, and subsequently inactivity.

Expansion

Sport England have agreed a £250m expansion of their place approach, which will see some funding invested into deepening the understanding and the learning within the initial 12 pilots, but will also look to expand to 80-100 new priority places. The funding will be coordinated through the Active Partnership network, with places identified through a place needs classification process; places have been categorised into the top 10/20/25% of need, based on inactivity and inequality data.

Sport England are initially working with Active Partnership’s where the conditions are ready to move at pace with systemic place-based work and where there are places identified in the top 10%, that are not already directly receiving Sport England investment.

See attached data outlining the areas within Stockton that have been identified as priority places.
