Place Based Working with British Judo

Introduction

Karen Roberts from British Judo connected with us after we shared a workshop at a recent Buddle Stakeholder event. I was happy to meet with Karen as I wanted to learn more about Judo's Finding your Feet programme. Karen wanted to understand more about our approach to Place Based Working.

What happened?

I met with Karen and Maddie Thompson (club co-ordinator)  on line. We discussed the clubs in and around Darlington and sought to identify if there were any opportunities to work together . An interesting discussion as we recognised the different roles and motivations of clubs and coaches. There are those who want to extend their reach, those who are happy with a status quo, some seek remuneration others are engaged for the good of their club.

We spoke about possible opportunities to undertake delivery at Coorporation Road School. The school are happy to offer their hall for free as long as a club is making a no or low cost session for local children.

Given the work I am trying to do around care providers I was really keen to find out more about Judo's 'Finding Your Feet' Programme. This is a judo based offer which reduces the risk and fear of falling. Coaches use the skills of Judo to coach 'safer falling' and better recovery to standing. The sessions increase mobility, activity levels and social interraction.

This video explains a little more about the programme. I will share the film with the next carers forum. Karen is going to identify any Tees Valley based coaches that are appropriately qualified.
