Introduction
Gemma and I attended an event in Darlington hosted by One Voice Darlington. This is a Unity of the Christian Churches in Darlington. The event brought a variety of agencies from across the town together, primarily to listen to a presentation from ROC - (Redeeming our Communities) a Manchester based charity that work to draw communities together and empower positive change.
What happened?
The event brought agencies form across Darlington together at King's Church. Representation included Councillors, Health workers, Police, church groups, 3rd sector agencies, private sector providers and Tees Valley Sport.
It was a very positive event with a presentation from Vicky Thompson a Baptist Minister on all that was great in Darlington, then where the cracks were appearing and some people were not getting the support they needed. Vicky emphasised practical examples of partners working together to make change happen. One of the projects referenced was our First Steps to Fitness.
Debra Green from ROC then presented on what they do and how they work to enabled community development by harnessing the power of agencies working collaboratively.
Who was involved?
Multiple organisations as stated. Very positive event and positive vibe to the room. I feel that people were enthused.
How?
This was a first stage of the process. One Voice Darlington have since approached attendees for feedback and are assessing the appetite to work with ROC on a Darlington focussed intervention.
What did we learn?
Who ROC are and what they do.
Some new partners were available to network with.
The reach of the church and church groups - 'it is not just hymns on Sunday'. The ease and quality that a minister lends to presenting to a large group.
What were the biggest challenges?
No real challenges at this stage as an attendee. It was noted that as the event was organised by One Voice there was minimal BAME representation or representation of other faith groups.
What went well?
The event - whole thing was great.
What didn't go well?
Nothing
What could have been done differently?
Sharing of attendees contact details.
The real value of this experience is yet to be identified. If the agencies are able to progress an exercise with ROC it will provide great learning about how they harness the power of community and drive change.
