Embedding PACC -Physical Activity Clinical Champion training into Teesside University

Introduction

Background

Lou and I attended a meeting with Caroline Gibson (one of Tees Valley’s local PACC’s) in October 2023 following an introduction made by Lou’s contact from CDDFT (County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust).

PACC training was led by Sport England and OHID in 2017, where phase one continued until 2019. Phase two then started in 2019 and ended in 2022.

The Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre will lead a consortium with the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine and Intelligent Health to run the Sport England-funded Physical Activity Clinical Champions (PACC) Programme.

PACC training is developed by, delivered by and delivered too health care professionals aiming to:

· Provide evidence-based training and support resources for healthcare professionals to improve awareness, knowledge, confidence and skills to promote physical activity to patients to prevent and manage ill health

· Test how to best embed physical activity within clinical practice so that physical activity conversations, signposting and prescribing become part of normal NHS clinical practice

· Support the management of patients with long-term conditions, including people with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer

· Help reduce long-term demand and costs on the NHS.

Insight gathered

I utilised the Active Partnership Hub to request learning from AP’s who had already began implementing PACC training within their area.

Several AP’s reached out and during the subsequent meetings I gained further knowledge of the PACC training, barriers and strategies to embed the training.

Implementation plan

After gathering insight a plan with formed with Lou and Robin to focus on embedding PACC training into Teesside Universities relevant courses.

The aim would be to have PACC training added to the curriculum for a variety of health partners therefore increasing awareness, knowledge and confidence sharing information around PA to patients.
