Creating Active Schools

Introduction

Creating Active Schools is a whole systems approach to embedding physical activity throughout the school day. It looks at how schools can adapt their work around policy, environments, stakeholders and opportunities to improve children's physical activity levels.

It is underpinned by a behaviour change model to ensure schools have the capability, opportunities and motivation to make changes and sustain them, putting physical activity at the heart of the school.

Redcar & Eston School Sports Partnership are leading on the project, supported by Tees Valley Sport and Cleveland School Sports Partnership. In year 1, we worked with 5 schools across South Tees and 1 in Darlington. As part of the widening and deepening approach, year 2 has seen the project expand to 12 more schools; 3 in Redcar & Eston, 3 in Cleveland, 3 in Middlebrough, 2 in Darlington and 1 in Hartlepool.

Each school completes an online review of their school with regards to the 4 key areas; policy, environments, stakeholders and opportunities and then on the back of this audit, produces an action plan with 3 priorities to focus on each year. This bespoke plan is unique to each school and forms the priorities that they'll focus on for their first year of the Creating Active Schools journey.

The video shows the impact CAS has had on year 1 schools with whole school priorities and improving children's physical activity levels.
